PechaKucha Night Vol. 50

Chris Adlam

Stripping the myth of stripping

I spent the last 5 years training strippers / exotic dancers. I am a sales trainer and I have been working with the girls teaching them to sell themselves; to increase their revenue. Stripping is a misunderstood profession and I would like to share my story and what I discovered working with the girls. I am an experienced speaker and believe your audience will be interested, informed and entertained by my presentation; "Stripping the myth of stripping" I will share the truths about the industry and expose the myths.

Mother Daughter Trip around the World

When I turned 50 I resigned from my long term job, sold the house we lived in, took my daughter who was 9 at the time out of school and we embarked on a 366 day round the world trip. We visited 10 countries for a minimum of 5 weeks in each country (USA, Canada, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia). We stayed with local families and spend our money on experiences not things. A life changing trip.

Photographing the Southern Line.

The Southern line is the train line that runs between Cape Town and Simonstown. It carries 3.5 million people - from all demographics, monthly. In 2009 I negotiated a deal to photograph this line which resulted in an honest reportage of commuting life South Africa. As far as I understand I've been the only photographer allowed to legally photograph the line.

Gabi Lowe

The 10 R's of Resilience

Loss, pain and suffering are unavoidable parts of life. The question is how do we live our best lives and find joy and happiness after these inevitable moments of great pain or anxiety? Gabi Lowe and Pippa Shaper - both no strangers to pain and loss - have teamed up to provide the answers in The Resilience Course. Gabi will share their 10 R's of resilience as an introduction to the box of tools that everyone needs to overcome and thrive in the face of adversity. Gabi is an acclaimed life coach and the mother of the late Jenna Lowe who passed away in 2015. Gabi drove Jenna's #GetMeTo21 campaign which shifted national awareness of organ donation. She was announced Lead SA's youth hero.

Waking up earlier

One extra hour in the morning can change your life. Everything in life benefits and needs time to succeed and improve. Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs understood it. They used this hour in the morning effectively and are giants in their respective fields. 20 minutes Exercise; 20 minutes Meditating; 20 Reading. I’ve done it for the last year and it has transformed my life in incredible ways. I’ll tell you how it will transform yours too!

Florian von Groote

A Little Pain For A Lot Of Gain

Measles are on the rise again, vaccination rates are dropping. As someone who has seen people die of vaccine-preventable diseases and someone who strongly believes in evidence, I want to clarify and emphasize the obvious. Vaccines work, vaccines safe lives and vaccines are safe. Whoever does not vaccinate their kids despite access to vaccinations is a privileged, entitled fool!

Paul Dalton

Solving BIG problems

The world has many BIG problems to solve, Climate, Energy, Food Security, Waste are just a few... and lots of people are doing some great work in solving these. But what if there was a better approach? I use my 80:20 thinking to demonstrate that not all problems are equal and that clear identification and solution of just a few or the problems, (those that cause the majority of impact). In doing so we can dramatically accelerate the rate of solving BIG problems. I encourage the audience to view the world in this way and to realize that we can focus on less and achieve more.

Rene Bahloo

Environmental art as a spiritual practice

Australian/South African artist Rene will speak of her practice of using natural fibres to create installations and sculptures - in the framework of spiritual practice. She will share pictures of her work, as well as the indigenous australian weavers she works alongside, to share her philosophies of weaving as the embodiment of metaphors of wisdom.

Masoodha Kajee

My name is Masoodha & I'm a Demon Slayer

Masoodha Kajee My name is Masoodha & I'm a Demon Slayer My topic focuses on the battle with our inner demons, especially in an age where being anything but perfect is considered an abomination. Many are trapped by low self worth and suffer in isolation. My aim - remove the stigma associated with imperfection and vulnerability being deemed a weakness.

Why we need nuclear energy

For much of my professional career, I have been driven by a desire to play a role in the invention and adoption of renewable energy technologies globally. For me, this desire was a part of a bigger dream, one of a future in which humanity powered its existence using renewable energy sources. I saw global climate change as the greatest challenge facing my generation. I still do. In pursuit of this dream I, moved to the USA in 2008 to begin my academic training in renewable energy technologies. After reviewing the facts, I believe that nuclear energy is the safest and most environmentally friendly source of energy and our best chance of averting climate change.
